When a family of artists set up their easels side-by-side on a beautiful day, you can be sure there will be people looking over shoulders.
Artists Charles Pabst, Michael Pabst, and Cara Moran Pabst met recently at San Juan Capistrano to paint and soon an entire class of children came over to observe what they were doing. “We created quite a stir,” says daughter Cara.
It’s not common for there to be one professional artist in a family, let alone three. Charles Pabst is a seasoned landscape artist and father of both Michael Pabst, also a landscape artist, and Cara Moran, a contemporary impressionist artist. “We encourage and inspire each other, yet are all able to maintain our own artistic identities. It’s a wonderful blessing to be a part of.”
Perhaps even more notable was the fact that the mission of San Juan Capistrano was able to capture the hearts of an entire family of artists. “All three of us have our own strong opinions of what we enjoy painting. But we were all able to settle onto a facet of the mission that inspired us within its historical gardens. My father has a very spiritual approach to his artwork. His landscapes are filled with an incredible depth, and he’s acquired such an amazing ability to capture this sense of legacy in so many places he’s painted throughout his career, while at the same time making them beautiful and serene.”
Daughter, Cara Moran, has found quick success with her juicy, contemporary florals and impasto landscape paintings. Son Michael Pabst achieves glowing colors and architectural majesty using soft brushwork within his landscape and figurative paintings.
The story of the California mission has left our country with such a rich, cultural and faith-filled heritage. The Pabst family hopes to celebrate this legacy in their own special way in their upcoming show.
