"Color has become an integral part of my work, and is especially central to the concept of Big Medicine.
Throughout history, the appearance of a white bison was a rare and deeply meaningful event. Only one bison calf in millions is born white, and they are regarded as sacred by the Lakota and other Native Americans.
Big Medicine was one such white bison, born in 1933 in Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation. He was seen as a good omen for the efforts of the people there to reestablish a sustainable herd of bison for their reservation. He was named in recognition of this and was given special care throughout his 26 year lifespan.
With this sculpture I have chosen to depict a quiet moment. To show their power and strength, bison are often represented charging, running, or fighting; I believe they possess a more reserved, subtler power at rest as well, and opted to make that my focus here. What was most important to me was the hope that white bison represent, their strong symbolism of faith and promise."
