Taos Thunderstorm

Winter often means cattle are ‘dry-lotted’...they may be locked off of pasture and fed hay or silage. Sometimes this is necessary to protect the pasture from overgrazing, sometimes other reasons. Dry winters, the dust can get to be a problem. For this painting, I used a horned Hereford cow from Joyce Biebelle’s herd, my friend and long-time rancher. This oil displays a lot of the bright blue under painting...a technique I use on all my work. Cool (blue) under warm (browns & rusts). It just makes the work ‘pop’ and gives good dimension.
