Early Life & Education
Born in Santa Clara Valley, California, Charles H. Pabst was the first of two children born to Edwin & Leota Pabst, in a family culturally engaged in art, music, and theater.
From an early age, he was drawn to painting—starting with his grandmother’s watercolor paints.
He pursued formal training in Fine Arts, graduating from Arizona State University.
Transition to Fine Art
After college, Pabst worked for seven years as a commercial artist in Arizona before dedicating himself fully to painting as a fine artist beginning in 1978.
His breakthrough came in 1982, when his debut solo show at the El Presidio Gallery of Tucson sold out its 30 paintings; since then, he has consistently sold out exhibitions across the U.S.
Artistic Style & Inspirations
Pabst is best known for his landscape paintings that capture the grandeur of the American West—evoking feelings of peaceful solitude, natural tranquility, and majesty.
Critics and art institutions have praised his work for its emotional depth and technique:
Others highlight his “Magical palette—rich and vibrant, yet soft and gentle”, and commend his ability to “Capture the beauty of America’s natural treasures”
Artbook Magazine describes his work as having a “unique blend of bold, impressionist brush strokes” with “soft, pastel hues” accented by bold touches that convey “Warmth, awesome majesty, and power”.
Southwest Art Magazine notes the “serenity” of his paintings, where aesthetic and natural elements feel in “balance”.
